چکیده

In a course in elementary statistics for psychology students using criterion-referenced achievement tests, the total test score, based on dichotomously scored items, was used for classifying students into those who passed and those who failed. The score on a test is considered as depending on a latent variable; it is assumed that the students can be dichotomized into the categories “mastery” (with scores on the latent variable above a cutting score), and “no mastery” (with scores below the cutting score on the latent variable). Two problems are considered: (a) How many students are classified incorrectly? Using the binomial error model a procedure is described for computing the classification proportions: p(mastery, passed), p(rnastery, failed), p(no mastery, passed), and p(no mastery, failed). (b) What is the optimal cutting score on a test? Using a loss function a procedure for computing the optimal curring score is described.

An Extension of Ordering Theory on Scoring and Its Application in Cognition Diagnosis of Capacity Concepts

Ordering theory method was used to determine existing hierarchies within a set of items. But the method is restricted to dichotomously scored items. This limitations narrow its application in many empirical data. The purpose of this study is to introduce polytomous ordering theory (POT), developed by Y. H. Lin , W. M. Bart and K. J. Huang, and apply it in the knowledge structure analysis of cap...

MEASURING AND DETECTING DIFFERENTIAL ITEM FUNCTIONING IN CRITERION-REFERENCED LICENSING TEST A Theoretic Comparison of Methods

The validity of a measurement instrument depends on the quality of the items included in the instrument. The overall aim was to compare methods for detecting and measuring differential item functioning, DIF, in order to find a suitable method for examining DIF in a dichotomously scored criterion-referenced licensing test. The methods were discussed with respect to whether they are parametric, t...

Fitting Item Response Theory Models to Two Personality Inventories: Issues and Insights.

The present study compared the fit of several IRT models to two personality assessment instruments. Data from 13,059 individuals responding to the US-English version of the Fifth Edition of the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) and 1,770 individuals responding to Goldberg's 50 item Big Five Personality measure were analyzed. Various issues pertaining to the fit of the IRT models t...

Conditional Covariance Theory and DETECT for Polytomous Items

This paper extends the theory of conditional covariances to polytomous items. It has been mathematically proven that under some mild conditions, commonly assumed in the analysis of response data, the conditional covariance of two items, dichotomously or polytomously scored, is positive if the two items are dimensionally homogeneous and negative otherwise. The theory provides a theoretical found...
